Video Games and Immersive Content Development | Creative Dossier | Advisory

The Creative Dossier is a mandatory attachment in the Video Games and Immersive Content Development call. Since applicants have asked questions about this attachment, the Creative Europe Desk Finland has produced the following advisory. This is not an official EU Commission guideline and does not replace the instructions in the Funding & Tender portal, the Call Document, or guidance received directly from the funder.

The concept of a “Creative Dossier” is generally unfamiliar to applicants in the games industry. We are sometimes asked whether a pitch deck or a GDD (Game Design Document) could be submitted as an attachment instead. However, a Creative Dossier does not refer to either of these. In this call, it refers to a project description.

The document takes its name from the MEDIA film and TV calls, where a document presenting the creative content of projects has the same title and precise guidelines. In this call, no template is provided, so the applicant must interpret the instructions.

What is a Creative Dossier?

The Creative Dossier is defined in the call document on page 9 as follows:

A creative dossier (description of gameplay, information on Graphical User Interface and Head-up Display, level and character design, pictures, graphic bible, script, storyboard, creative director’s note, etc.)

Read the award criteria for the call carefully (9. Award Criteria, p. 17). Consider which aspects of your project can best be highlighted in the application form as text, and which are better presented visually.

The Creative Dossier can include anything you consider relevant to present the creativity, artistic merits and originality of your project. Be sure to highlight your project’s visual strengths.

You can also use the dossier to visually explain technical aspects that might be hard to describe in words—for example, by including diagrams that illustrate your game loops.

Format

There’s no set template for the Creative Dossier in this call, so you’re free to choose the format that works best for you. Keep in mind that it needs to be submitted as a PDF and the file size can’t be more than 10MB.

A popular way to put together a Creative Dossier is as a slide presentation. Tools like Canva or PowerPoint make it easy to combine images and text.

There’s no limit on the number of pages but keep an eye on the file size if you’re including several high-resolution images.

Video and Audio

Sometimes applicants wish to include a link to a video or audio file in the Creative Dossier. Keep in mind, that all essential information in the application should be described in text form. The reader of the application must be able to obtain all essential information in writing.

If including video or audio in the Creative Dossier supports your application, note the following:

  • Watching the video or listening to the audio must not require downloading the file, as evaluators are not allowed to download any files other than the application and its attachments for assessment.
  • The hosting service must be able to verify that the file has not been modified after the application deadline.
  • Do not embed video or audio files in the Creative Dossier PDF.
